CHAPTER 9
A dark building rose in the distance growing larger the closer we drove. Malcolm didn’t say much causing many questions to form in my mind. I hope he is coming up with an explanation of how he resurrected from the dead. If he had stayed dead for three days, I would think I am witnessing the rebirth of Jesus, I snickered at my poor attempt at turning this into a joke. He cut his eyes in my direction but continued the silent treatment.
“So Malcolm,” I said no longer able to keep quiet. My curiosity had me ready to explode.
“Not now, Zora.”
My eyes squinted. I don’t appreciate the tone he took with me, like I am some damn child. I took several slow breaths before opening my mouth again. I know if I say what is on my mind, he will end up regretting rescuing me. The car made a sudden turn into a loose gravel driveway leading up to… Wait a minute. Wait a mother fucking minute. This cannot be where we are staying. The windows and door of the white ranch style home is boarded up with plywood. How does he expect us to enter this place? Or even for me to stay at this potential roach motel?
Malcolm walked around to my side of the car holding the door open for me. I faltered on the brink of cursing him out and running the way we came. His eyes darted around the yard scanning for movement or danger. He didn’t realize the danger stood in front of him pissed.
“Walk around to the back. We will enter through the basement door.” He moved forward assuming I followed.
I leaned against the car with my arms crossed against my chest refusing to take another step. I wanted to go home and leave this god forsaken place. Malcolm slowly turned around walking back towards me with purpose in his steps. The last couple of days had been trying. My stress level through the roof. My patience nonexistent. And anything but the truth right now will have me committing murder.
“Zora, this is not the time or place for you to be act like a spoiled child. I told you I will explain everything to you but I will not do it in the open. Get inside,” he long fingers pointed towards the house challenging me to obey.
A low growl rumbled in my chest. I rolled my head around on my shoulder. I pushed my shoulders down until the tension eased slightly. My feet became tangled when I pushed myself off the car. I didn’t fall but Malcolm reached out for me. I swatted his hands hard. My fingers stung when it hit his knuckles.
A silver glint reflected in Malcolm’s hand. He held a gun tightly in his left hand pointed straight out. The danger on my life so great a gun is needed. If I can only go home, maybe just maybe the danger will leave. I could tell this is stressing him. The muscles under his shirt jumped and strained with each step he took.
